Mercer County Dog Pound
This website was created in order to help the dogs
at the Mercer County Pound. In light of the
recent
attack on the dog warden and the Mercer County
Commissioners, volunteers are attempting to work
constructively to help improve the pound, through
cooperation.
Please note the following:
Animal Control Officers pick up dogs under all
sorts of conditions. They may be sick, starving,
injured, and/or infested with parasites. A county
dog pound is not an animal shelter or a dog rescue
organization. They provide basic food and shelter.
They are not required to keep animals after three
days, if they are picked up as strays. Owner turn
ins can be euthanized immediately.
County dog wardens are not required to cooperate
with animal rescues. Small facilities become over
crowded, and when rescue organizations "beg"
county
dog wardens to hold dogs, they become even more
crowded. Over crowding leads to problems, like
the
spread of parasite infestation, dog fights, and
difficulty keeping pens clean.
I have worked with the Mercer County Dog Warden
for
many years, and have found him to be cooperative
and reasonable.
Let's all work together to make positive changes.

Lets help!
Now this is the site we need to see in order to
be of some help. Slanderizing and ridiculing
does not help these babies. Some are being so
quick to judge but are they offering support?
Are they volunteering? Do they donate to help
expand this facility? We need to work together
to make this a better facility! Lets start
rescuing these wonderful abandoned babies and
get them into loving forever homes, Tom (The
Warden) is willing to cooperate if we can get
some serious inquiries.

Lets Donate!
I think it is amazing how people in the
community are coming together. I am so happy to
hear about the kennels and beds!! Lets post what
the cost is needed for supplies to get the
construction under way so we can donate! Thank
you to everyone who is making this possible!!

Fraud
This dog warden is a joke! He will come into
your back yard and take your dog off his chain!
3 days to put a dog to sleep there gotta be a
law against that. Also when a dog owner brings a
dog in to be put to sleep how do you actually
know its his dog. If i ever catch this guy in my
back yard again there will be hell to pay!

I an SO Happy
Jack- Mr Fraud- Well If you took better care of
your dog, and not leave them out on a chain, and
make them a member of the family like they
should be maybe someone wouldnt take them away
from you.
I have rescued a German Shepherd from this pound
several months ago, and was horrified at the
puond condition. It was very sad, and they
pulled the dog I had called about out of a feed
box. But they were in the process of cleaning,
and yes it was clean, and feeding. The dogs yes
were overcrowded but with what they had to work
with, they did their best. I am SO happy that
the facility is being redone!!! Congrats and
dont let people get you down!

Responsible Pet Owners
Hello,
In reference to Mr. Jack I must say I do agree
with one statement. I wish there was a law that
made it illegal to euthanize in 3 days. I
personally dont know of any that do that but Im
sure they are out there. I know working with the
Mercer County Pound dog warden, he dosent do
that. I am so pleased to be working with him and
he goes way out of his way to hold animals as
long as possible. While space is available, he
holds them so that people can rescue and
adopt. In reference to the conditions there,
every pound and every back yard has dog feces in
it even when we are responsible pet owners. If
you come to my yard after my dogs have been out
there you will see quite a few messes. If you
come back at a different time, a few hours
later, it will be spotless. Please dont judge
anyone by a one time visit. We all try to do our
best. If there were all responsible pet owners
out there we wouldnt have pounds. If people
would quit tieing a dog to a tree all day or
letting them run the streets and spaying and
nuetering, I think we would have a much lesser
problem in the world we live in. If breeders
would quit breeding on a regular basis for
profit then that would help as well. How can
people call themselves a "rescue" but yet buy
from puppy mills? Dont they realize this is
adding to our problem or is this their hypocrit
nature? Also in reference to an owner bringing a
dog in to be put to sleep..come on! What kind of
a loving furparent would bring their beloved pet
in to a pound in the first place and ask a
warden to put them to sleep?? If anyone would do
such a dispicable act with this warden, I know
he would wait for rescue or adoption. If the dog
is quite ill, he brings the dog to the local
animal hospital. Mr. Jack, just a bit of advice
to you..fence your yard because if you are
keeping your dog chained to a tree all the time,
sorry, but I would do something about that
myself.

Good work at Mercer County
I am glad to see the overhaul that is being done
over there. In my work with Siberian Husky rescue,
I was led to a dog in this shelter five years ago.
My Dakota is the most wonderful guy. Our rescue
has pulled several Huskies from this shelter now.
People often don't realize the limited funds
available in rural areas like this. While there is
a three day time limit, I know for a fact that if
the dog is nice, and has a chance at adoption or
rescue, Tom will do whatever he can to hold on
that dog and make sure it lives. With his limited
resources, I certainly would not want to be in his
shoes and have to make the decision on who lived
or died that day. Taking care of an animal, and
then having to put it down because no one wants
it, would not be an easy task and my hat is off to
Tom for being able to do it day in and day out for
years now.

New Facility
I guess this is more of a question then a
comment but I was curious to why there is no
doors for each dog to go outside. Would it have
cost that much more to have had kennel runs with
doors for the outside? I am sure people would
have pitched in more money if the facility
looked like it was going to be a good place for
the dogs. Just an observation!

How animals are put to sleep
I am glad to see you are putting up a new shelter
for the animals. It is sad they cannot hold
animals more than 3 days, but I think it is much
worse when the pets her are put to sleep buy gas
and not in a humane manner with a needle. There
has to be money to change this practice. Dava

Rescued dog from here
My friend just rescued a very old dog from here,
it was in awful condition, diarrhea, worms, just
awful where is the heart that leaves a painfully
thin, skin and bones actually, scared old dog
laying on cold concrete. Terrible.
|
2 Rescues from Here
In October 2006, with the help of Linda and Tom,
my husband and I were able to rescue 2 wonderful
dogs from the shelter. These guys were filthy and
had worms, but the only reason they had a chance
was because Tom was willing to keep them as long
as he did to give them a chance. We love our dogs
to pieces and are so thankful for this pound.
While conditions may not be ideal, I know that
this dog warden does his best, contributes from
his own pocket and does all he can to give these
dogs the best chance they can have. On behalf of
all of the dogs who have been given a second
chance at a good life as loved members of a
family because of all of your work - THANK YOU.
You will surely have one big wet-nosed welcome in
Heaven when your time comes.

Not any more
They don't use gas to euthanize here anymore. I
worked with Tom a number of years ago to pull 3
dogs (a GSD, a very old golden, and a black
lab). He held all these dogs with me as I was
driving out from PA. I am so happy to see all
the great improvements being made to the kennels!

Angels - Saving Innocent Animals
Thank you for trying to save the innocent animals
whose only crime is not having a loving family.
Abbey is gorgeous. I'm so glad she is going to
rescue. We can only hope legislation gets passed
to require a license to breed and not spay or
neuter pets. Bless You!!

job well done tom!
I have rescued dogs from tom occasionally and
place them in homes. I do commend tom for
keeping the dogs as long as he does sometimes if
he feels the dog is an adootable dog. its always
been a pleasure to deal with tom. thanks Tom

good job tom
all I can say is everytime ive worked with Tom
on obtaining a dog he works with me and keeps it
as long as possible till I can try and find a
home for them. I watch this site and if i see a
dog i think i can place i call tom and he has
held the dogs for me longer then three days too
till i could get out there. He does as good of a
job as you could ask for. very understanding
guy.

Great Job
I came across the mercer county pound site
several years ago. BIG improvements have been
made, bless everyone who has worked to improve
this pound. Kill rate use to be close to 100%
many dogs penned together with little hope of
adoption or rescue. Keep up the great work you
are all doing and some day maybe all pet owners
will understand pets are family & ALL pets need
spay/neutered but until that day comes their
will be shelters/pounds and I for one am
thankful for people like all of you who work
hard and fight each day to help our animal
friends who end up in such places. Thank You!
